Bulk email marketing as the name suggest is an internet marketing strategy that involves sending huge amounts of emails in order to market products or services.

In the recent times bulk email marketing has become an extremely popular internet marketing tactic that comes as an easy tool in order to attract newer customers from different parts of the world. The most important factor that has contributed to the success of bulk email marketing is the fact that it's extremely cost effective. Imagine sending postal mails to thousands of prospective customers and you will realize how relatively cheap a bulk email marketing campaign could be.

Well, where there are pros the cons tend to appear and in this case things are no different. The major throne in the way of email marketing is 'Spam'. By sending out huge amounts of email you could be accused of spam or UCE (unsolicited commercial email). So is there a way out?

The only way to be on the safer side is to go for permission based email marketing which could be in the form of opt in emails. The second most important thing to keep in mind is to study the CAN-SPAM guidelines. Always make it a point to obtain email addresses based on these guidelines only. In effect from 2004 the federal CAN-SPAM act has guidelines for spammers and email marketers and forbids the use of commercial email to commit fraud or mislead people.


Some important points covered under CAN-SPAM act are as follows:

  • The act defines commercial email as a mail whose primary purpose is to advertise or promote a commercial product or service
  • The act prohibits the use of commercial email to commit fraud or mislead people
  • Allows certain types of commercial email that comply with various provisions
  • The act requires commercial email to have a functional "opt-out" option for recipients
  • Not to send mails to recipients who have opted out of the service
  • Action against spammers will be taken solely by FTC or state law enforcement authorities

Spam is a major problem that email marketers are facing at present. So to be on the safer side and to avoid being framed as a spammer, always go for opt in permission email marketing campaigns and avoid any kind of short cuts to create email lists as far as possible .
